Marcos has completed his second swim: Asia to Africa

The second crossing of the Swim Across the Continents project has been completed successfully by Marcos Diaz, connecting Asia with Africa from the shores of Jordanto Egypt, a journey never before undertaken.

Marcos started the swim at 8:27 am and was bidden farewell by sports and governmental authorities of the town of Aqaba and residents of the area, as well as the military and the resident coordinator for the United Nations in Jordan, Mr. Luc Stevens.

The duration of swimming was 4 hours, 54 minutes and 32 seconds and the distance 18.3 km. Although the days before the swim the wind blew strongly, today the day was in excellent conditions to carry out the journey. However, there were some difficulties in navigation to the finish line, because of this, Marcos had to swim along the coast, which added an extra 45-55 minutes to the swim. In the finish line, a lot of people welcomed Marco, including the Dominican Ambassador to Egypt Maria Gabriella Bonetti, and the Governor of the State of Sinai, plus military and sports authorities and a lot young athletes.

Marcos said he felt strong at all times, given that he had the change to rest properly before the swim and commented that this may have been the most beautiful scenery in which he has been able to swim throughout his career. He added it was a bit frustrating to have to swim for more time than was established, but that he was very grateful that he felt strong and that the motivation of the people waiting and team’s support helped him reach the finish line.

With this journey, the Swim Across the Continentes campaign which has the support of the United Nations for the Millennium Development Goals, finally arrives to the African continent successfully. In July, the crossing # 3 of this ambitious project will stage the Strait of Gibraltar where Marcos will swim from Africa to Europe.
